{"id":2431,"date":"2016-11-07T05:05:20","date_gmt":"2016-11-07T05:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/?p=2431"},"modified":"2020-05-20T05:04:12","modified_gmt":"2020-05-20T05:04:12","slug":"thank-you-idaho-author-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/thank-you-idaho-author-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Thank You Idaho Author Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">I had a wonderful time at the Idaho Author Awards ceremony last week.<\/h4>\n<p>Sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alohapublishing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aloha Publishing<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friesens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Friesens Corporation<\/a>, the awards have been going for six years, but this year the reception took place at a new venue.<\/p>\n<p>Past award receptions have been held at the Powerhouse Event Center in downtown Boise, Idaho.<\/p>\n<p>This year, they moved the event to the brand new &#8220;JUMP&#8221; center, also known as Jack&#8217;s Urban Meeting Place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2433\" src=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/JUMP-Building.jpg\" alt=\"JUMP\" width=\"600\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/JUMP-Building.jpg 600w, https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/JUMP-Building-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A multi-million dollar project years in the making, <a href=\"http:\/\/jumpboise.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JUMP<\/a> is funded by the J.R. Simplot family, and has been described as part-convention center, part-park, and part-art studio.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2432\" src=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/JUMP-room.jpg\" alt=\"jump-room\" width=\"300\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/JUMP-room.jpg 300w, https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/JUMP-room-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>We were in the &#8220;Jump&#8221; room on the third floor which was beautiful, a grand open space surrounded by floor-length windows.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see from this picture taken just outside the room, the architects used a lot of fun color in their design, so we felt comfortable immediately.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&#8217;t your usual stuffy awards event!<\/p>\n<p>The room was filled with round tables which made it easy to reach out and make some new connections.<\/p>\n<p>I was lucky enough to meet <a href=\"http:\/\/cristeniris.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cristen Iris<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/jeriwb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeri Walker<\/a>\u2014both of whom I &#8220;knew&#8221; on Twitter but had never met in person. Each was involved in making the event a success, having lended her talents to judging and organization.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2444\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2444\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2444\" src=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Award-Trophy.png\" alt=\"&quot;Loreena's Gift&quot; took first place, fiction.\" width=\"300\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Award-Trophy.png 300w, https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Award-Trophy-236x300.png 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2444\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Loreena&#8217;s Gift&#8221; took first place, fiction.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I also met a number of other great people, some authors and some who had helped with the contest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/books.friesens.com\/contact\/#all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim Hewitt<\/a>, a Friesens representative and the gentleman presenting me the first place fiction award above, smiled so sincerely in every picture! He was the perfect host and had a way of making all award recipients feel deserving.<\/p>\n<p>He also knows his stuff about printing\u2014if you&#8217;re looking to print your next book with a traditional press, talk to him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alohapublishing.com\/team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryanna Young<\/a>, founder and CEO of Aloha Publishing, was the power behind the event, and one of those people that works hard to encourage artists and others around her, while taking little credit herself.<\/p>\n<p>She spoke only briefly at the podium, but I got to talk to her during and after the reception, and found her to be a humble and inspiring person.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2435\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2435\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2435\" src=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Maryanna.jpg\" alt=\"Maryanna welcomes us all to the event.\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Maryanna.jpg 600w, https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Maryanna-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Maryanna-240x180.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maryanna welcomes us all to the event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were hors d&#8217;oeuvres to be had, and of course no one turned those down. It felt wonderful to receive the recognition for <a href=\"http:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/books-2\/loreenas-gift-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Loreena&#8217;s Gift<\/em><\/a>, but the best part was meeting the other authors and professionals involved in the book world.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2439\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2439\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2439 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Me-with-Lincoln-2.jpg\" alt=\"Abraham Lincoln\" width=\"270\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Me-with-Lincoln-2.jpg 270w, https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Me-with-Lincoln-2-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Me having a talk with our past president.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That wasn&#8217;t the only thing we did in Boise, though.<\/p>\n<p>We also got the chance to look around a bit, and just happened to run across this awesome statue of President Abraham Lincoln in Julia Davis park, just across from the rose garden.<\/p>\n<p>The photographer sent this photo to my younger brother, who promptly responded, &#8220;Tell her to ask him to come back and be president.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The night before the awards ceremony, we went to see a film at &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theflicksboise.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Flicks<\/a>&#8221; downtown.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re ever in the area, don&#8217;t miss out on this little 4-theater gem. They show all the smaller, independent films which I rarely get to see.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2440\" src=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/The-Flicks-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"the-flicks\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/The-Flicks-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/The-Flicks-240x180.jpg 240w, https:\/\/colleenmstory.com\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/The-Flicks.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The theater has a cafe instead of a concessions stand, and you can eat before your movie or take your food in with you.<\/p>\n<p>We had a lovely chicken and spinach lasagna, and then went to see &#8220;The Dressmaker&#8221; starring Kate Winslet. It was quirky and quite brilliant at the same time, and we really enjoyed it.<\/p>\n<p>In case you&#8217;re wondering who the &#8220;we&#8221; is in this equation, meet my Mom, Mary (pictured with me below), who made the trip to both attend the awards reception and so we could spend a couple days together.<\/p>\n<p>She lives in a different state than I do, so we take every chance we can get to visit.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was also the photographer, who took most of the pictures in this post except for the ones of the JUMP building and The Flicks theater, and the one Jeri took of me receiving my award.<\/p>\n<p>Photo credit for this last picture goes to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alohapublishing.com\/team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laura Cesare<\/a>, editor and proofreader for Aloha Publishing.
